After much discussion it was with great sadness that we decided to close Lightbowne Road Methodist Church, and amalgamate with Ashley Lane, Gill Street and Streetfold churches to form one church Moston Methodist Church.
I had belonged to Lightbowne church with my parents since 1925.
Shortly prior to the amalgamation 1st September 1962, in December 1961 the heating system had broken down (where’s Jim when you need him?)! and thus we decided to close the church. Ten of us went to worship at Streetfold – Arthur and Muriel Reins, Bill, June, Pat and Jack Higginson, my parents, brother Alan and myself.
Four of us had been in the choir at Lightbowne and were literally grabbed on our arrival by Mr Dootson (Graham’s Granddad) and asked to join the Streetfold choir which we were happy to do. I am still in the choir.
This turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to us because it helped us to feel we belonged. Soon I was approached by Eric Hughes, who asked me to join the teaching staff in the Junior Church.
This, and my subsequent years as Brown Owl are amongst the most cherished memories, along with the love and warmth of fellowship which I have always been shown throughout the happy and, sometimes sad times, in my life.
